Catching Zedz Quilt Pattern PDF
Stargazey patterns give you permission to make something beautiful without needing to be perfect
Memory Quilting
Some quilts start with a design or technique, some quilts start with function in mind, yet others start with a choice of fabrics.....Catching Zedz is one of the latter. When I turned fifty we took a pile of friends and family to a rustic bush abode for the weekend. No presents were desired but guests were asked to bring some fabric - important to them or our shared history - that I could later put to artistic use. From towels to beanies. From organza, through hand dyed velvet, to hearty home knits. Fabrics that challenged on all fronts. How was I to make a ‘my-story’ quilt from these?
My design starting point had to be grey wool and noisy zeds. The mix of fabrics worked well in a maths-free strip-pieced block that was reverse appliquéed to squares of wool. The appliqué was machine stitched - with primitive hand stitch detail in an extra large running stitch in tapestry wool added later. The quilt has no binding or batting, simply a lovely wool backing. We are snug-as-a-bug under this one.
And your memory quilt? All you need is a simple repeat image - a letter or a shape or a grand variety of them. Use your fabrics, your imagery and your life to make ‘your story’. Block size variations are included in the pattern.
