In Australia, louvres are an almost iconic architectural feature. They are a very sustainable solution to cooling in our hot summers. I grew up with these and still find their form and function fascinating.
The solid Aboriginal Australian fabrics in warm earthy colours on my sample also help to place them in central Australia - although these blocks look great in large florals and contemporary solids. There are three sizings of the blocks; small, medium and large. Each sizing also has the main louvrez sizing and another border block that can unite a set of five into a superblock. Then you can alter their direction..... quite a few permutations to play with.
FABRIC REQUIREMENTS
This PDF quilting pattern includes full fabric requirements, cutting instructions and step-by-step assembly guidance. You may customise it to your desired quilt size.
sample size - 651⁄2” x 70” (166cm x 178cm)
block size - 191⁄2” x 31⁄2”
feature fabric - 4 yds (3.7m) of assorted prints e.g. 16 fat quarters
block borders and binding - 4yd (3.7m) of assorted solids (24”/60cm cuts are good)
also needed; batting - 70” x 74”, backing - 4 yds (3.7m)
With freeform blocks like this, fabric requirements will vary from quilt to quilt. I give you minimums only. Be generous with your purchases as extra can always be used in the backing.
