Mohair Circles Quilt Pattern PDF

For years I kept in my possession two worn mohair scarves, one pink, one blue. They were my maternal grandmother’s and one of the many old family things that I felt connected to. That connection took a different turn when I started seeing, and collecting, other old mohair scarves and mohair rugs - one day they would be given new life together was my thinking. An old cottage bought for our growing family, including new grandchildren, bought together the time and place for celebrating mohair. It gets pretty cold down south in Winter - what better place to be covered in intergenerational love and warmth?

The quilt itself is simply made of blocks that feature a pieced-in mohair circle. The circles are rotary cut using a small rotary cutter and a set of purchased circle templates. The bias grain on both the backgrounds and the circles make it easy to machine stitch. The mohair circles also have a circle of batting underneath to fill and push them forward. My backgrounds are corduroy and all the circles are mohair wovens but woven wools would be beautiful to use also. The technique will work for cottons too.

Also included are instructions for the blind/ back binding. This little detail is wonderful on many quilts.

As usual my patterns are just a starting point - I’ll give you enough variations to keep you circling happily for ages.

FABRIC REQUIREMENTS

Sample size - 100“ x 80“ (254cm x 203cm) (king size)(10” block & 8” circle size)
Circles - Recycled Mohair scarves & rugs - the equivalent of eighty 8 1/2” circles
Background Squares - Corduroy pieces - the equivalent of eighty 11” squares
Batting to fill out the circles - (optional) - the equivalent of eighty 8” circles
To Cut - an 18mm rotary cutter
- Perspex ‘Circle’ templates in the sizes you need, graduating in 1/2” increments.
Aim to purchase templates that have eight divisions marked.
also needed; backing, batting, stitching thread, quilting thread,
& perle cotton#5 in various colours for handstitch detailing (optional)

With freeform blocks like this, fabric requirements will vary from quilt to quilt. I give you minimums only. Be generous with your purchases as extra can always be used in the backing.
